GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

SER YouthBuild Learning Academy gives youth ages 16 – 21 who are not currently enrolled in school the opportunity to earn credits and complete their High School Diploma for FREE.

Graduation requires the completion of the following 18 Michigan Merit Curriculum Graduation Requirements:

English Language Arts (ELA) – 4 Credits

  • English 9 (1 credit)
  • English 10 (1 credit)
  • English 11 (1 credit)
  • English 12 (1 credit)

Mathematics – 4 Credits

  • Algebra I (1 credit)
  • Algebra II (1 credit)
  • Geometry (1 credit)
  • Senior Year Math (1 credit)

Science – 3 Credits

  • Biology (1 credit)
  • Chemistry or Physics (1 credit)
  • Additional Science (1 credit)

Social Studies – 3 Credits

  • U.S. History & Geography (1 credit)
  • Civics (0.5 credit)
  • Economics (0.5 credit)
  • World History & Geography (1 credit)

Physical Education – 0.5 credit

Health – 0.5 credit

World Language – 2 credits

Visual, Performing, and Applied Arts – 1 credit

SER Learning Academy also offers work-based learning positions, work readiness programs, and resume creation assistance.

How does attendance work?

Yes! SER YouthBuild Learning Academy are chartered by Detroit Public schools. We are the only online learning lab / alternative credit recovery program structured like this in Metro Detroit.

Attendance is mandatory. Classes begin at 9:00am and are held every weekday, Monday through Friday.

Both of our campuses house the High School Diploma completion programs.

When is the first day of school?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2022 – Classes begin at 9:00am!

Is this a virtual program?

SER YouthBuild Learning Academy is not fully virtual, but is structured in an alternative education/learning lab format.

We believe you achieve your goals most efficiently through in-person classes with support and flexible instruction. Daily attendance is mandatory and the academy calendar is structure as regular semesters.

However; you will be able to complete classes faster by working on your coursework at-home, online. Students are not limited to classroom access to the APEX system.

Technology will be available for those individuals that may need it through the Lending Library.

Can you help with transportation and/or childcare?

We’re so glad you asked. Please reach out to your SER YouthBuild Learning Academy contact (or use our general information listed below) to find out if you are eligible to receive daily or weekly bus tickets. We’ll also help you come up with a plan for reliable childcare and have a variety of resources to offer that you may not be familiar with yet. We are ready to help!
